HAMPTON — Ethel Powell Brockley, who served two terms on the Elizabeth City County, now Hampton, School Board and retired in 1971 as a librarian after 22 years with Hampton schools, died Sunday, Feb. 13. She was 85.

Mrs. Brockley was a trustee of Charles H. Taylor Library for 45 years and a former secretary of state of the Virginia PTA and a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Hampton.

 

The native of Newport News was a member of Northside Church of Christ, Newport News, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class for many years. She was a national life member of the Hampton Woman's Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Brockley Hayes of Orlando, Fla.; a son, E.E. Brockley Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Northside Church of Christ by Mr. R. Taylor Jefferson. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Newport News.

Ethel Brockley was a member of my church, Northside Christian.  She has been gone for many years.  I remember that she let no one even whisper on the library.  She was the choir director at my church  She and her husband were pillars of our church.  Well well known and loved.  We miss you Ethel and Edwin.
